If you’ve ever been confused by any document put out by the U.S. Federal Government, then you should be happy to know that the House of Representatives recently passed the Plain Language in Government Communications Act of 2008. Of course, why an Act had to be drafted for something so… logical… is beyond me, but at least it’s a step in the right direction, even if it did involve your hard-earned tax dollars. The article from which I learned of this goes into some details of the Act, and discusses how usability applies, not only to a site’s functionality, but also to its content. Language that is concise and easy to understand is paramount to the usability and accessibility of a site overall.
